Officials marked the grand opening of the new Fayette County Recycling Convenience Center with an Earth Day celebration April 22.
Uniontown, PA - Officials marked the grand opening of the new Fayette County Recycling Convenience Center with an Earth Day celebration Thursday.
Fayette County Recycling Coordinator/Stormwater Manager Sheila Shea, along with the Fayette County Board of Commissioners and Fayette Chamber of Commerce hosted a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony at the center, located at 105 Romeo Lane in Uniontown.
The new, county-run facility will offer a self-serve, drive-through option for residents to bring both traditional and hard-to-recycling items for drop-off year-round.
The invitation-only event included an information booth for attendees to network with officials regarding the county’s state-of-the-art recycling program; refreshments and more.
The event marked the latest milestone in Shea’s efforts to completely revamp the county’s recycling program. Shea will also hold the 2021 Spring Hard-to-Recycle event at the Recycling Convenience Center Saturday, April 24, marking the end of Earth Week.
Fayette Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Muriel Nuttall served as master of ceremonies for the press conference. In addition to Shea and Fayette County Commissioners Dave Lohr, chairman; Vincent A. Vicites, founder of the county recycling program; and Scott Dunn, speakers included:
- Chris Koontz, Operations Manager of Carry All Products.
- Sharon Svitek, Bureau of Waste Management Program Manager, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
- Sue Quinn, Outreach Coordinator for state Sen. Pat Stefano.
- State Rep. Matt Dowling.
- State Rep. Bud Cook.
- State Rep. Ryan Warner.
- State Rep. Pam Snyder.
- Nate Nevala, District Chief of Staff for U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler.
- John Frick, Regional Manager for U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey.
- Fayette County Buildings and Grounds Manager Ray Eicher.
Nuttall also read a congratulatory letter of support from U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, as he was unable to attend.
Local, Fayette County businesses were featured, with Mary DeAngelo of Mary’s Corner Cafe, supplying custom, individually-sealed cookies for the occasion. United Dairy of Uniontown donated beverages for the event, while Uniontown Staples and Walmart also donated supplies to the cause.
Fayette County Community Relations Coordinator Kaylie Moore worked with Shea, Nuttall and Eicher to organize the ceremony at the facility, which is the site of the former Goodwill Recycling Center.
Fayette County purchased the property using a DEP Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act grant. Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania opted to leave the industry and close its long-standing recycling center in May 2020, after serving the county for about 30 years.
Fayette County has since entered into an agreement with Carry All Products Inc. for hauling services; and Superior Fine Grind LLC of South Connellsville for processing services.
Video and photos from Thursday’s event will be available on the Fayette County Facebook page.
